Best time of year to surf in Nicaragua
One of the best things about surfing in Nicaragua is that you can surf all year round. Warm water, regular swells, and the famous offshore winds on the Pacific coast make Nicaragua a great destination for surfers throughout the year.
That said, the conditions do change with the seasons, and some months are better suited to certain levels of surfers.
December to March
The dry season brings plenty of sunshine and consistent offshore winds. Swells tend to be smaller and less frequent, which can create more manageable conditions for beginners.
This is a great time to learn the basics, practice your pop-up, and get comfortable in the water.
April to August
As the South Pacific swell season gets going, Nicaragua starts receiving larger and more consistent swells. April through June can bring some of the biggest waves of the year, while the offshore winds continue to create clean conditions.
For intermediate and advanced surfers, this can be an especially exciting time, with bigger and more powerful waves across many surf spots.
For beginners, there are still plenty of smaller waves and sheltered spots to learn on — it simply becomes more important to choose the right beach and conditions.
September to November
The rainy season can bring plenty of south and southwest swells, while the crowds tend to be smaller. Even though there can be more rain, the surf can still be excellent.
These months can offer a great mix of conditions, from fun smaller waves for beginners to more powerful surf for experienced surfers.
So, when should you go?
The short answer: whenever you want!
There is good surfing in Nicaragua all year round. If you're a beginner, the smaller and more manageable conditions during the drier months can be a great place to start. If you're an experienced surfer looking for bigger and more powerful waves, April to September is generally when you'll find more consistent South Pacific swell.
