Why do surfers wax their surfboards?

If you've ever watched surfers get ready for the water, you've probably seen them rubbing wax all over their boards. But why is surf wax so important?

It helps you stay on your board

Surfboards are smooth, which is great for moving through the water but not so great when you're standing on them. Surf wax creates grip between your feet and the board, helping you stay in place while paddling, popping up, and surfing the wave.

Without wax, your feet can easily slip, especially when the board is wet.

Where do you put the wax?

Wax is applied to the top of the board where your feet will be. Surfers usually create a textured layer of small bumps, giving their feet extra grip while surfing.

Which wax do you need at Playa Hermosa?

Playa Hermosa has warm tropical water, usually around 28–30°C (82–86°F).

That means you should use tropical or warm-water surf wax. This type of wax is harder than cold-water wax, so it stays grippy in warm temperatures.

If you're surfing with Tribu Surf at Playa Hermosa, your instructor will make sure your board has the right wax for the conditions.

When should you re-wax?

If your board starts feeling smooth or your feet are slipping, it's probably time for fresh wax. Many surfers remove the old wax and apply a new layer regularly to keep their board grippy.
